How to pack reusable moving bins

Set up one packing area

Start with an open bin, labels, a marker and the protective materials your belongings need. EcoBins packages include labels and a marker; optional supplies are shown in the booking form. Keep a separate bag for belongings you will carry personally.

Pack the things you use least first. Seasonal clothing, spare linens and books you will not need before moving day are easier to put away than your everyday kitchen items. Finish one area before opening several more, so loose items do not get mixed together.

The bins are 27 × 17 × 12 inches. Check bulky items against the shape of the bin before wrapping them, and set aside anything that needs a different container.

Divide books and other heavy items

We recommend no more than 45 pounds in each bin. Use a lower weight if that is what you can comfortably handle. Do not keep adding books, tools or other dense items simply because the lid still closes.

Spread a heavy collection across several bins. Keep heavier pieces low and use light, soft items around them where suitable. Check the weight while you pack, before the bin is full. A bathroom or luggage scale can help you avoid guessing.

Carts help move bins across suitable level surfaces. They do not make stairs, obstacles or an unstable stack safe. Tell your moving team about steps and floor access ahead of time, and ask for help with loads you cannot comfortably manage.

Give fragile belongings their own protection

A sturdy container does not replace wrapping. Wrap breakable items individually, cushion the bottom and sides, and fill gaps so the contents do not shift freely. Avoid placing a heavy object on top of something delicate.

• Dishes and glasses: separate pieces with appropriate protective material and avoid direct contact between them.
• Small electronics: keep cables with the matching device, protect screens and use original fitted packaging when available.
• Toiletries: close lids, contain possible leaks separately and keep them away from paper, textiles and electronics.
• Art and unusually delicate pieces: ask your mover about suitable specialist packing before loading them.

Close both lid halves without forcing them. If a lid presses against the contents, repack the bin. Do not treat the bin as waterproof protection or leave packed belongings exposed to weather.

Label for the room you are moving into

“Kitchen · everyday dishes” is more useful than “Box 12” on its own. Label the destination room and a short description of the contents. Add a number if you want to keep a simple inventory on your phone.

Use the supplied labels rather than writing directly on the bin. Keep labels visible when the bins are stacked, and point out fragile items to the people doing the lifting. A label helps someone handle a bin thoughtfully; it does not replace protective packing.

Mark a few bins “Open first” for towels, bedding and the items you need to settle in. Keep medication, essential documents, keys, chargers and valuables in the separate bag that stays with you.

Plan the last pack and the first unpack

Before the crew arrives, clear a path to the bins and keep your inventory handy. Tell the movers which bins belong in which rooms. If you have booked Teddy Bear, confirm your packing scope with them so you know what you are packing yourself and what their team will handle.

At the new home, unpack the essentials first and work through one room at a time. Empty the bins before your EcoBins collection, remove your labels and check for small items caught in corners. Gather the rented carts too.
