How many moving bins do I need?
Start with the rooms you need to pack, then count the things inside them. Two homes with the same number of bedrooms can need very different numbers of moving bins.
Use your home size as a starting point. Your kitchen, books, closets and storage areas are what usually change the count.
Start with a package, then check your rooms
EcoBins home packages provide a useful first estimate. A lightly furnished apartment may fit its suggested package comfortably; a home with full cupboards, a large book collection or a packed basement may need extra bins.

These are package sizes, not a guarantee that every household will fit. Check the current packages and add extra bins if your inventory calls for them. Office moves have their own package choices.
Do a quick room-by-room inventory
Walk through your home before choosing a quantity. Include spaces that do not appear in a bedroom count: a pantry, linen closet, home office, garage shelves and storage locker.
- Kitchen: count cupboard and drawer contents, including the wrapping needed around dishes and glasses.
- Bedrooms: separate folded clothes and small belongings from hanging clothes, mattresses and furniture.
- Living areas: note books, games, small electronics and decorative items. Furniture is a separate part of the move.
- Storage: open the closets you rarely use. Decide what to donate before renting space for it.
Put a rough bin estimate next to each room and add those estimates together. Keep fragile items and unusually heavy collections visible on your list instead of treating them as ordinary loose contents.
Allow for weight and protective wrapping
Our bins measure 27 inches long, 17 inches wide and 12 inches deep. We recommend packing no more than 45 pounds in each bin. See the bin dimensions picture to compare the shape with what you plan to pack.
A bin full of books can become difficult to carry before it looks full. Divide heavy items between bins and use lighter belongings to fill remaining space. Delicate pieces need padding around them, so do not estimate their space as if they were stacked bare.
A floor lamp, large television or awkwardly shaped item needs its own packing plan. Do not force it into a bin or close the lid under pressure.
An example: a one-bedroom home with a busy kitchen
Imagine a one-bedroom apartment with a small wardrobe, a full kitchen and two tall bookshelves. The 30-bin package is a starting point. The kitchen needs room for wrapped dishes, while the books must be split into manageable loads. Those two areas could matter more than the bedroom itself.
Write down the kitchen and book estimates first, then add clothes, bathroom items and everything else. If the total exceeds 30, compare adding bins with selecting another package. Choose the rental length around packing and unpacking
Your rental needs to cover the time before the move and the time it takes to empty the bins afterward. Delivery day is not necessarily moving day. Leave enough time to pack at the old home and unpack at the new one.
