How to label moving bins and keep a simple inventory
A useful label tells someone where a bin goes without opening it. A short inventory helps you find one item, check the delivery and know which bins still need unpacking.

Give every bin a destination room and a unique number. Keep the detailed list on your phone, and use only the removable EcoBins labels on the designated textured area.
Name the rooms at the new home first
Label for the place you are moving into. “Spare room” is confusing if the new home has two spare rooms, and “upstairs” does not identify which door. Choose names the whole household and moving crew can understand: Kitchen, Main bedroom, Bedroom 2, Office.
Write those names on a simple room list. On moving day, use matching temporary signs where permitted, or show the crew which room is which before unloading. If belongings from one old room are going to two new rooms, separate them while packing instead of expecting someone to sort them at the destination.
Use four details on the label
Use the same order each time: destination room · bin ID · short contents · priority or handling note. The number prevents several identically labeled kitchen bins from becoming indistinguishable. A short prefix can keep numbering simple: K01, K02 for the kitchen and B01, B02 for the main bedroom.
| Room and ID | Contents | Helpful note |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen · K01 | Everyday plates and bowls | Fragile · Open first |
| Kitchen · K02 | Baking trays and utensils | Open later |
| Main bedroom · B01 | Sheets and pillowcases | Open first |
| Office · O01 | Notebooks and desk organizers | Office shelves |
Use “Open first” selectively. If every bin has that instruction, it stops helping. Keep keys, medication, essential documents and valuables in a personal bag that stays with you rather than relying on a label to make them accessible.
Put the label on the designated area
EcoBins orders include removable labels and a marker. Use the textured label area on the side or top of the bin, as described in our booking FAQs. Avoid the smooth surfaces and do not write directly on the rental equipment.
Choose a visible position that works with how the bins will be arranged. A side label is useful when another bin covers the lid. Keep writing large enough to read without moving the stack, and use words even if you also organize your list by color.
Use only EcoBins removable labels. Permanent stickers and extra tape can make removal difficult. If you need more labels, ask the team. A “Fragile” note should also be mentioned to the movers; it cannot substitute for protective wrapping.
Keep one shared inventory, with a row for each bin
A phone note or simple spreadsheet is enough. Start each row with the exact ID written on the bin. Add the destination room, a few searchable contents and its current status. Update it when you finish packing rather than reconstructing the list on moving day.
| ID | Destination | Contents to search for | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| K01 | Kitchen | White plates, cereal bowls | Packed |
| B01 | Main bedroom | Queen sheets, blue pillowcases | Arrived |
| O01 | Office | Notebooks, pen tray | Empty, label removed |
Agree who maintains the list if several people are packing. A quick photo before closing a bin can help with a mixed group of belongings, but you do not need to photograph every ordinary item. Keep sensitive details in your private inventory instead of writing them on the outside.
Check IDs as bins leave and arrive
Before loading, compare the packed bins with your list. Mark bins you are carrying yourself so they are not mistaken for missing items. At the destination, use the labels to send bins to their rooms and reconcile the IDs once unloading is finished.
When a number seems missing, first check the bins in your own vehicle, the room next door and any items set aside at the old home. A numbered list gives you a specific bin to ask about. It is an organizing aid, not a replacement for any inventory your mover prepares.
Turn the inventory into your return checklist
Change each bin’s status to “Empty, label removed” only after checking it. Before collection:
- Remove belongings and all personal packing materials.
- Check corners and under loose wrapping for small items.
- Remove every removable label.
- Count the bins against your rental confirmation.
- Gather rented carts and other returnable equipment.
- Make the agreed pickup location accessible.
If something is missing or damaged, contact EcoBins. If bins are still full, ask about extra time before the confirmed pickup; extensions depend on availability and charges. Our delivery-to-pickup timeline helps you leave time for this final check.
