5 Tips for Scheduling Your Move So It's as Stress-Free as Possible

November 4, 2022

Scheduling your move can seem like an insurmountable task if you’re doing it all on your own, but don’t worry—you won’t have to do it alone! The best way to get your move scheduled is to follow these five tips for scheduling your move so it goes smoothly and without any stress. This guide will help you with everything from finding the right company to hiring an expert to ensure that your possessions arrive safely at their new destination!

  1. Create a Move Spreadsheet

To help plan your move, you should create a spreadsheet listing every item you own and what room it’s in. This way, when it comes time to make a moving schedule, you know exactly where to put everything. You can use a simple Google Spreadsheet or even Microsoft Excel; just make sure everyone knows how to access it so they can enter their items as well. Keep this list updated with new purchases, so that there are no surprises on the day of the move.

It also helps to check for warranties on electronics and appliances before moving them; this way if anything breaks during the move, you have all the necessary paperwork on hand.

There is never enough time for packing!

  1. Use Rentable Moving Boxes

One of my favorite tricks to keep moving costs low is to pack some boxes and tape, but then hire a company to deliver them straight to your new place. Renting boxes from a company like Ecobins can be much more cost effective than buying your own. Just make sure you return them in good condition, as it can be costly if you don’t.

Make Sure You Know What You're Bringing: Get rid of anything that doesn't need to go with you. It may seem harmless to bring a bunch of souvenirs, but chances are they will just take up space in your new place. Plus, bringing too many items could lead to increased storage fees after the move. Get Rid of Anything That Doesn't Need to Go with You: If it doesn't need to go with you, get rid of it now!

  1. Expect the unexpected

It's better to have a plan B specially for unpredictable events that may occur. Take a moment to talk with your moving company about how they handle any challenges that might arise. Check if there are any additional charges for last minute changes or different pick up or drop off locations. If it’s your first-time hiring movers, ask for referrals from friends who have hired professional movers in their area before. Try to find out what their overall experience was like and make sure you’re as prepared as possible for your upcoming move!

  1. Use Supplies Wisely

On moving day, your number one goal is to make sure all of your boxes are safely packed and transported. Whether you use plastic tubs or cardboard boxes, make sure you use enough supplies so nothing breaks enroute. You’ll be glad you did!

But remember that the packing process doesn't end on moving day: when you get to your new home, it'll take time to unpack and put everything away. Make sure you have ample supplies on hand for this task as well. Be sure to buy sturdy but lightweight bins and organize them by room.

If you need more containers, you can opt to rent reusable storage containers from suppliers near you, which they provide various sizes according to your needs.

  1. Start by Moving Easy Items First

Don’t begin packing anything until you have your new address. Start with things that are easier to pack first, like clothes and linens. Once these items are packed, they will be out of your way and you can focus on more difficult items like electronics, bookshelves, or large pieces of furniture. These items will be less stressful to move because you won’t have any major adjustments or decisions to make.
